Still flying the Pearl of Africa high, NBS TV's news anchor Solomon Serwanjja emerged the winner of the highly rated BBC World News Komla Dumor Award 2019.
The charismatic and passionate investigative journalist had to beat a number of fellow competitors as his award winning reports took the day with storm mention the BBC Africa Eye Programme about the "Stealing from the Sick" report as his bravery helped to unmask to the world the illegal sale of prescription drugs by medical personnel on the African continent, the case study being his home country Uganda.
Serwanja becomes the fifth winner of the award that was created to honor the fallen BBC World News presenter Komla Dumor who passed on in 2014 aged 41. The previous winners include his fellow Ugandan and BBC newscaster Nancy Kacungira, Waihiga Mwaura, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyerule among others.
Apart from the prize, Solomon Serwanja will enjoy the next three months at BBC in London and later travel back to Africa to carry on with his investigative skills.
While speaking about his mega achivement, Serwanja has revealed that he has for long been inspired by the sounding legacy left by the late Komla Dumor as far as the African perspective of life is concerned and he is now more determined at not only exposing the critical challenges on the black continent but also bring out the success and progress.
"Komla brought so much to the African narrative - his perspective was a breath of fresh air, as he believed Africa was rising and that the world needed to see the continent from a different angle," said Serwanjja.
"His reports always struck a chord with me, and I feel the same passion for our continent that he demonstrated. I want to continue his legacy by telling stories that cast a spotlight not only on the critical challenges we face in Africa, but also the progress and successes that have been made."
