As preparations for the Masaza Cup finals intensify, Gomba continued its fine form showed in the tournament with a 1:0 edge past record league Champions SC Villa on Sunday.
The match played at the Kabulasoke Core Primary Teachers College (PTC) play ground on Sunday, February 7, 2021 was used as a build up match for both sides.
Gomba is eying a record fifth Masaza Cup title and have already made it to the finals where they will tussle it out with single winners Buddu on a date yet to be communicated.
SC Villa are eying a return to Uganda Premier League fixtures which had been at a hold due to the persistent COVID-19 pandemic. Their return (15th February,2021) will see them encounter MYDA, 7:0 losers at KCCA FC on Saturday,6th February,2021.
Striker Jackson Ssemugabi was on target for the four time Masaza Cup champions and his lone strike was enough to had the Gomba side a deserved lead.
Midfielder and former Bulemeezi Masaza cup winning captain Ronald Ssekiganda tried to draw matters levelled for SC Villa in the first half but his effort hit the lower post.
Head of technical at Gomba Lions FC hailed his side for the display, speaking to Kawowo sports, this he had to say,
“I want to thank the effort of the players for the victory over such an established club as SC Villa. We are still preparing for the finals by improving the fitness levels of the players and mental attitude. We want to improve in the subsequent friendly matches. I also want to thank the fans who have supported us in the struggle."
